With Hertha BSC stands a relegated from the Bundesliga already fixed. On the last day of the game this Saturday (from 3.30 p.m.) it will be decided between Schalke 04, VfL Bochum, VfB Stuttgart and FC Augsburg who, as penultimate, has to go straight into the second division and which team still saves on relegation rank 16. There have been exciting duels to stay in the league more often in the history of the league, sometimes with decisions in the last few minutes and strange table constellations. The SPORTBUZZER, the sports portal of the editorial network Germany (RND), provides an overview.

Saison 1988/1989
A quartet has to tremble until the end: 1. FC Nürnberg, VfL Bochum, Eintracht Frankfurt and Stuttgarters Kickers are threatened with going into the second division before the last matchday. After the final whistle, all four clubs even have the same number of points, the goal difference is decisive. The Swabians are relegated because of the worst goal difference despite a previous 1-0 win against Nuremberg, Frankfurt has to be 16th in the relegation and saves itself there against Saarbrücken.
Saison 1998/1999
One of the most dramatic relegation finals in Bundesliga history: A goal in the 89th minute by Jan-Aage Fjörtoft saves Eintracht Frankfurt. The SGE wins against 1. FC Kaiserslautern 5:1 and jumps up to 15th place thanks to the better goal difference. Nuremberg suffers. The “Club” started the 34th matchday in twelfth place in the table, but was relegated third to last after a 2-1 defeat against SC Freiburg – there was no relegation at the time.
Saison 2005/2006
On the 34th matchday there is a direct duel between VfL Wolfsburg and 1. FC Kaiserslautern. Lautern would stay in the league with a win. In fact, the Palatinate are in the lead at half-time, but the “Wolves” turn the game around. In the end, Marcel Ziemer managed to equalize, but it was no longer enough for the Red Devils to win. The FCK descends.

Saison 2012/2013
Fortuna Düsseldorf has not been in a relegation zone for 33 match days. But then the unexpected took its course: Fortuna lost 3-0 to Hannover 96 at the end of the season, while FC Augsburg (against Fürth) and TSG Hoffenheim (in Dortmund) scored three points. In the end, Düsseldorf has to be 17th in the second division, Hoffenheim saves itself by being relegated to FCK.
Saison 2014/2015
Hamburger SV alone changed place in the table four times in 90 minutes on matchday 34. With their own 2-0 win against Schalke 04, the Hanseatic League still managed to get relegated. Instead, Hannover 96 sent Freiburg to the second division with a 2-1 win. SC Paderborn, who lost to VfB Stuttgart, was the last to be caught. HSV then saved itself in the relegation against Karlsruher SC.
Saison 2015/2016
With the better starting position, Frankfurt goes into a direct duel with Werder Bremen. Hannover, like Stuttgart, has already been relegated, it’s still about 16th place. A draw is enough for the Hessians, and it’s still 0-0 at the Weser Stadium up to the 88th minute. Because the SGE switches to management mode, Werder strikes ice cold after a standard. Confusion in the penalty area after a free kick uses Papy Djilobodji to score the golden goal. Frankfurt later prevailed in the relegation against Nuremberg and managed to remain in the class.
Saison 2016/2017
A year before the first crash from the Bundesliga, Hamburg manages another last-minute drama in a direct duel against VfL Wolfsburg. Luca Waldschmidt, who came on as a substitute the day after his 21st birthday, scored just before the end of the game to score the 2-1 winner for HSV and sent the “wolves” into the relegation game. There Wolfsburg prevails in the Lower Saxony duel against Eintracht Braunschweig.
