Russian Dr. Vladimir Bondarenko, a rehabilitation and mechanical therapy specialist, mentioned two sleeping positions that are considered the most dangerous to human health.
Bondarenko revealed, “The body recovers only during sleep, so if the sleeping position is incorrect, the person will not feel comfortable even after sleeping,” indicating the severity of the harmful effects of sleeping in front of the television, quoted by Al-Bayan website.
The head is raised and the back is bent
“The head can be up and the back bent on the sofa and on the bed if there is a large pillow in the back,” he said. This position causes disturbances in blood supply and breathing. After sleeping in this position, the person feels pain in the chest area (spine), and feels tension in the neck area. He may feel pain in the lower back because the spinal curves do not relax during sleep. This is according to what was reported by the Russian “Novosti” news agency.
The head is bent back
The Russian doctor added, “The second position that is harmful to the body is sleeping with the head bent backwards… A person may use an unstable pillow, and after he sleeps, his head bends backwards. In this position, he begins to snore and his breathing becomes disturbed through the nose and throat. While sleeping in this position, it is practically not possible to restore the functioning of the respiratory and cardiovascular systems.”
He continued, “Of course, the heart continues to work in a normal rhythm, although during sleep it must decrease from 70-78 to 50-60 beats per minute. “This means that it functions as if it were awake, or even more active.”
Bondarenko advised that “during sleep, it is useful to lie on one side, with the knees slightly bent, and there is also a need to change the position from time to time.”
He added, “A person breathes during sleep through the diaphragm (abdominal breathing), meaning that the upper part of the lungs rests, and we breathe through the stomach. This process allows us to start bowel movements, stimulate the gallbladder, liver, and spleen, and stimulate the entire digestive system. We can do this when we lie on a low pillow, on one side, with the knees slightly bent. Sleeping on your back is also normal. It is normal for a person to toss and turn during sleep more than ten times.
