Deceased Scottish actor sean ConneryBest known for playing the role of James Bond in several films, he famously made a controversial statement about slapping women that has resurfaced thanks to social media.
Connery, whose Bond character was a womanizing spy, gave a television interview to Barbara Walters in 1987. During the meeting, Walters referenced a previous interview Connery had conducted in which she made a statement that it is acceptable for men to slap women. Walters never notices which interview she is referring to, but Connery tells Walters that she still believes she is fine.
When asked if he thinks it’s a good thing to do, Connery replies: “No, I don’t think it’s a good thing. I don’t think it’s that bad. “I think it depends entirely on the circumstances and whether it is warranted.”
Naturally, Walters followed up by asking, “What would deserve it?” Connery then gives a strange explanation that makes Walters’ thought bubble nearly burst from overload.
Connery dice:
”If you’ve tried everything else (women are pretty good at this), they can’t leave it alone. They want to have the last word and you give them the last word, but they are not happy with the last word. They want to say it again and get into a really provocative situation. So I think it’s absolutely right.”
Connery seems to be trying to defend the idea of slapping a woman if she has “the last word,” but he’s still not satisfied.
The video ends with Walters telling Connery that he will receive a lot of mail. However, if you look at the full segment on YouTubeYou can see Connery responds with a laugh: “I could get some women.”
Walters goes on to ask Connery if he’s ever slapped his own wife, to which he replies no, though he adds that she pushes him to the edge, or as he puts it, “She pushes me to the edge.”
At the beginning of the full interview, Connery had stated that both he and his wife play golf, but that he doesn’t play with her because he doesn’t like playing golf with women, adding that playing golf with men is “more enjoyable.”
Another big movie star from the same era as Connery, who also had a reputation as a womanizer, is the late Omar Sharif. He once punched a woman on camera, as seen in a then-viral TMZ video that caused quite a stir at the time.
However, the most curious thing is that neither Sharif’s nor Connery’s image ended up suffering much. In fact, Connery would soon land the role of Indiana Jones’ father in the blockbuster film. Indiana Jones and the last crusade.
Also only shown in the full interview is Barbara Walters calling Connery “sexist”, which causes a disagreement between the two, as Connery objects to the label, although he later confusingly says that he doesn’t care if someone calls him sexist.
