For the long, dark nights in the cold season, reading books for children and their parents is a great leisure activity. The Labor Chamber of Upper Austria therefore tested 19 current reading books for children. They were supported by nursery children and their teachers. 14 of the books tested were rated “Very Good”, including 3 favourites.
Test result: children’s books (4.8 MB)
19 books in the test
19 reading books were tested for children aged 2 to 6. The most important criterion for the evaluation was that the children enjoyed reading the books to them. It is very important that they understand the content of the stories and that they enjoy looking at the pictures. In addition, the age information must be correct.
Lieblings Complete Guide
The children couldn’t get enough of 3 books and the teachers rated them “Very Good”:
- Jim is in a good mood:
A very funny, attractive book that the children enjoyed picking up again and again. - Nia and Lily and the Night Unicorn:
A beautifully illustrated book that encourages children to stand up for each other to achieve a common goal. - Ria’s wish:
The book not only delighted the children, but also impressed the teachers.
5 books were not so well received
The 5 stories that were not so good for children and educators were difficult to understand and would be more suitable for older children because they contain too much text. The children did not want to read these books to them anymore.
Reading aloud becomes an adventure in your child’s mind
- Make sure the atmosphere is relaxed. The sofa or the comfortable bed are ideal places to immerse yourself in a story together.
- It is best to read aloud at the same time every day, for example in the evening before going to bed. This way you can end the day peacefully.
- Children know what they want, so let them choose the book themselves.
- Always read slowly and clearly. Work with volume and give individual voices to each character in the story.
- Allow breaks and questions and at the end talk about what you read together.
- Set up a small bookshelf for your child to collect their books.
- Take your child to places where books abound. Look for books together in specialist shops or the library and get advice on the site.
