The moon may “steal” Earth’s water for itself, and here’s how

The moon is known to influence the tides. The vast oceans on the Earth’s surface are affected by the Moon’s gravitational influence. It is common knowledge with textbooks around the world to teach these scientifically proven facts that were observed for centuries before the scientific age.

But our only natural satellite may also be “pulling” water for itself. A study says that water on the moon may have originally been on Earth!

There are various theories about how water molecules reach the lunar surface. Suggestions such as the impact of water-rich asteroids and comets have been made to explain the presence of water on the Moon.

But this new study raises an interesting idea. Research shows that hydrogen and oxygen ions released from Earth’s atmosphere combine again to form water on the moon’s surface.

But how could something that seemed unbelievable actually happen.

Research shows that the process occurs when the Moon passes through the tail of Earth’s magnetosphere (a teardrop-shaped bubble formed by Earth’s magnetic field).

When the solar wind strikes the earth’s protective magnetic field, some of the magnetic lines of force are broken. When the Moon passes through the tail of the magnetosphere, some of the damaged magnetic lines are repaired. This produces what is called a “rain” of hydrogen and oxygen ions. These ions combine to form water on the lunar surface.

The research was published in the journal Scientific Reports.
