The Montaigne Path: Discovering a Hidden Gem in the Loire

The Montaigne path or GR89 is a marked hike in the Loire which follows the path of the writer Montaigne in 1581. A road he had taken to reach Bordeaux from Rome. A still unknown GR of the department easily overshadowed by that of Compostela or Stevensen.

« On Wednesday November 15, 1581, I left Lyon after dinner, & by a mountainous road to sleep at BORDELIERE, five leagues, a village where there are only two houses. From there on Thursday morning, we made a beautiful full path, & in the middle of it near Fur, a small town, we crossed the Loire river by boat, & we went straight to L’HOSPITAL, eight leagues, a short closed village. From there, on Friday morning, we followed a hilly road, in rough weather of snows, & of a cruel wind, against which we came & we went to TIERS, six leagues “These few lines are taken from a diary that Michel de Montaignewriter and philosopher, wrote for a trip from Rome to Bordeaux in 1581.

Strong competition

Elected mayor of Bordeaux, he undertook a trip crossing France from east to west. A route that has been traced and marked out as a great hiking trail called; the GR89. This route is not the best known of the department of the Loire. He’s sometimes eclipsed behind the famous Camino de Santiago. The two cross in front of the Bâtie d’Urfé in Saint-Étienne-le-Molard, place iconic of Loire-Forez. ” On the hiking trails develop lodgings and receptions for hikers. We manage to create a economy on this tourism. For the moment, it is much more important on that of Santiago de Compostela, but we can hope thatit develops when the path of Montaigne will go to Bordeaux. » For the moment, the end of the markup is planned, but no official date has been announced.
