The Monkey King: Netflix’s Animated Spectacle Inspired by ‘Journey to the West’ and ‘Dragon Ball’

“Journey to the West” is one of the classics of Chinese literature and provided the template for “Dragon Ball” protagonist Son Goku. At Netflix, the literary original has now become the colorful animated spectacle “The Monkey King”.

“Dragon Ball” is real anime cult. In Germany, too, there is a sworn fan community of Saiyan adventures. Incidentally, the inspiration for the protagonist Son Goku comes from the Chinese novel “Journey to the West”. Here Sun Wukong as the monkey king is the main character. But the noble primate has many names: in Korea he is known as Son Ogong and in Japan he is called… Son Gokū!

The parallels become very obvious when you take a closer look at the first “Dragon Ball” episodes. Both heroes wield a magical staff that can change size and explore the world atop a kintoun, a flying supersonic cloud. And let’s not forget that Son Goku has a monkey’s tail sticking out of his pants and can transform into an Ōzaru – a King Kong-esque behemoth – during a full moon.

Starting today, August 18, 2023, you can experience The Monkey King, the animated adaptation of the Chinese literary classic, on Netflix. The Boxtrolls director Anthony Stacchi directed the adventure film from a screenplay by Ron J. Friedman (“Brother Bears”). The duo have worked together in the past, including on the hit Sony Pictures animation “Jagdfieber.”

The animation pleasure is also prominently cast vocally: In addition to “Jurassic Park” villain BD Wong, Stephanie Hsu (“The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel”), Jimmy O. Yang (“Boston”) and Hoon Lee (“Warrior”) were behind it the microphone.

This is the plot of “The Monkey King”

It is a time of magical beings, old gods and sinister creatures: in this world of myths and fairy tales, the Monkey King (spoken by Jimmy O. Yang in the English original) is supposed to defeat 100 demons. Easier said than done, especially for the monkey warrior with the big mouth, but that’s the only way he can get the attention of the “immortals”.

The loudmouth is accompanied on his adventures by his loyal companions. And he will soon be dependent on their help, because the Dragon King (Bowen Yang) has become aware of the small group. He is not at all happy that the Monkey King is helping humanity by freeing it from the demons. Can the warrior complete his mission while overcoming all dangers, obstacles and his big mouth?

This bloody revenge western from Netflix from 2021 is now supposed to get a sequel after all
