In the first episode of the anniversary season of The mole is immediately unpacked with a big surprise. An eleventh candidate is participating: Jens Zutterman (31). The West Flemish carpenter became a crowd favorite last season, even though he was the first to leave the game after assignment one.

“You won’t experience this twiceI said at the time. I do, but not really.” Jens Zutterman is the only candidate ever to start for the second time at The mole† He was also seen in the previous season. Then he had to go halfway through the episode after the first assignment in the raining corn field in Liedekerkehome. Even before the trip had left. The disappointment was great. Every Sunday night, multiple people posted on social media, “Hopefully they’ll let Jens return.”
The wishes have been heard. On the reunion episode, Jens received a cuckoo clock as a gift and a trip to the Moselle. It now appears important. “That plan to bring back any straggler in Liedekerke in this series was always there,” says presenter Gilles De Coster. “Although we had to keep that secret for a year. Jens’ return started at the end of last season when he got his gifts. It was nice to finally make that concrete in Lanzarote after all this time.”
Only when Jens leaves for the Moselle, is diverted to Lanzarote and gets out of a taxi into another car, does he hear from the fellow candidates that he is participating again in The mole† Although he has to complete an assignment together with the other candidates: send the number plate of his car correctly. If his three attempts are wrong, a paint bomb goes off. A reference to the 2016 season, in which first dropout Ruth was permanently eliminated with a paint bomb by her colleagues. That paint bomb is going off. His glimmer of hope is crushed.

Friend in conspiracy
Until Gilles brings him back to the group and says he’s staying. When he calls the home front, it turns out that his girlfriend has been part of the conspiracy all along: “Gilles has been at our house,” she says. Although Jens seems surprised, he is still suspicious of the other candidates. Moreover, he carries that cuckoo clock with lid: “That had to be”, it sounds. Later it becomes clear why: there has been an exemption for a year, without Jens knowing it.

On the third day, he is called away from the table for a photo shoot, in order to announce him as a candidate. Just then Gilles De Coster reports to the others what the exemption is. If they don’t take it away, their money will triple and Jens will get the exemption. If they do, then no money is made. Only Uma, Bert and Jens get to the clock with a ‘The floor is lava’ assignment. Unable to resist the temptation, Uma snatches the exemption. She shows it to the group. “I didn’t want a red screen,” she says. “You have been awarded it”, Jens concludes. It turns out well for him: he does survive that first episode.
