The Moldovan president calls on EU member states to support the country’s efforts to join the bloc

President Sandu said Russia’s invasion of its neighbor, Ukraine, with “brazen land grabbing, geopolitical conquests and redistribution of spheres of influence” is reminiscent of Europe’s difficult past.

She emphasized that Moldova and its people had responded to the shock, horror and crisis of confidence caused by the war with kindness, generosity and sympathy, receiving large numbers of Ukrainian refugees and providing humanitarian assistance to Ukraine.

Moldova formally applied for EU membership in March 2022, and President Sandu expressed strong conviction that Moldova was part of the European Community.

“We are aware that political decisions at EU level have yet to be taken. We are also aware that these will not be easy decisions. But granting Moldova candidate status will be the right decision. We belong to the European Union,” the president said.

Finally, speaking about Russia’s aggression, she said that Moldova clearly condemned the war against Ukraine. She emphasized Moldova’s support for Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. Sandu stressed that the Crimea is Ukraine, the Donbass is Ukraine, Kiev is Ukraine, and so it will always be.
