The iconic Volkswagen Golf is awaiting modernization in the middle of its life cycle, it is to be revealed in 2024. The Spanish mutation of AutoBild magazine was revealed by the head of the brand, Thomas Schäfer.
What’s more, he confirmed that there will be a ninth generation of the car called Golf. It could arrive sometime between 2027-2029, but according to Schäfer, it will run on electricity.
“We are working on a portfolio to see what could be the successor to the current golf. In my opinion, it will not have an internal combustion engine. It has to be an electric car,” says Schäfer.

He had previously outlined his vision for the car to be called the ID for Die Welt newspaper. The Golf and in the brand’s offer stood between the already existing ID.3 – which is also due to be modernized in the foreseeable future – and the small ID.2 model.
But he would share nothing with that, Schäfer said at the time and recently confirmed it in a Spanish interview. The ID.2 is supposed to be a small car standing on the MEB Lite platform with front-wheel drive. It was predicted by the ID.Life concept at the Munich Motor Show in 2021.
The Volkswagen Group is currently working on a “quality offensive” for all its cars. As part of the modernization of various models, this offensive is intended to solve the criticism leveled at some elements of the cars. Examples include the touch control elements on the steering wheel or the absence of backlighting of the bar under the display, which changes the temperature in the car and the radio volume.
