The modern workplace and its pitfalls

The way companies work is changing. There are plenty of keywords to describe this change: Workplace 4.0, Modern Workplace, New Work, to name just a few. These terms have the following in common: 8-5 jobs are no longer up-to-date, and remote work, flexible work models and trust work are concepts that are increasingly spreading and also being demanded. So companies have to fundamentally rethink their work culture. After all, the needs of workers and society in general have changed.

In recent years, companies have also increasingly tried to approach these concepts – but many find it difficult. There are many ideas and projects, but successful projects tend to be the exception. The challenges lie partly in the planning, partly in the implementation, but also in the basic understanding of the “Workplace 4.0” concept.

Nothing works without IT

Digitization is faster than ever. It promises more speed, more efficiency, more profit. Today you can work from wherever you want with little or no effort. The networking and the technologies for it are in place. The result is more modern infrastructures both in the office and at home, modern office building concepts and more agile working methods.

A smoothly functioning IT is the linchpin of all these developments, and it has to cope with the growing demands. Digitization makes a lot of things easier, so individual IT systems are often easier to use today. But elsewhere the effort increases, for example in the procurement of hardware or the administration of infrastructures.

Efficient and attractive thanks to DaaS

Due to rapid change, the lifecycle of devices has become shorter – it is now three to four years. However, many companies have not yet adapted to this situation. They buy devices and don’t replace them fast enough. The consequence: The newly hired worker is forced to work with the old dual-core laptop (or even desktop PC) of the predecessor. Not only does the device run slower, which costs employees more time every day; it is also less secure from attackers or system failures. Modern hardware, on the other hand, offers more opportunities to work safely, flexibly and efficiently.

With shorter lifecycles, entrepreneurs also make themselves attractive to future potential employees – especially among young talents. They already have the latest technologies at home. And the employer? He provides outdated equipment. A no-go if you want to reach and inspire new talent.

The infrastructure of a modern company must be state-of-the-art, and easy to use without interruptions. This is the only way to exploit the employees’ potential and only then is it possible to implement new projects relating to Workplace 4.0, such as collaboration.

The devil is in the details

For successful collaboration, certain basic requirements must be met, especially on the IT side. An example: employees can now also work from home. But if the offer can no longer be printed out and placed on the desk for the manager to sign, what then? This is just one of the thousands of details that need to be considered.

The same applies to on-site infrastructures that are intended to enable collaboration, such as meeting rooms. If employees only spend ten minutes setting up the technology each time they have a meeting, valuable time is lost, which runs counter to the goal of collaboration.
