Our excellent 4.5-star review of Anora calls the film “the Pretty Woman update we didn’t know we needed.” Here’s the trailer for the soon-to-be-released comedy-drama:
On May 21, 2024, “Anora” celebrated its world premiere as part of the most important film festival in the world, the Cannes International Film Festival. And the jury even awarded the film the festival’s main prize, the Palme d’Or. The reviews published afterwards were almost unanimously enthusiastic:
At Rotten Tomatoes Director and screenwriter Sean Baker’s (“The Florida Project”) work is listed with a quotient of 96 percent positive reviews. Our FILMSTARTS review, which was written immediately after the screening in Cannes, is no exception. In his conclusion, editor-in-chief Christoph Petersen calls the film “an incredibly energetic and relentlessly entertaining Cinderella update for adults.”
The US media currently considers him the clear favorite for the next Oscar ceremony. “Anora” will be released nationwide in German cinemas on October 31, 2024.
In the title role, Mikey Madison is seen, who you might know from a major supporting role in the Quentin Tarantino masterpiece “Once Upon A Time… In Hollywood”. The Californian can currently be seen alongside Natalie Portman in the new AppleTV+ series “Lady In The Lake”.
Also starring alongside Madison were Mark Eydelshteyn (“Guest From The Future”), Yuriy Borisov (“Silver Skates”), Karren Karagulian (“Starlet”), Vache Tovmasyan (“Lost & Found in Armenia”), Aleksey Serebryakov (“McMafia”), Darya Ekamasova (“The Americans”) and Ivy Wolk from the upcoming “Friendship”.
“Anora”: This is the story
Anora (Madison) makes a living as a stripper in New York City. One day, while at work, she meets Vanya (Eydelshteyn), the son of a billionaire Russian oligarch (Serebryakov). The young people quickly fall in love. When Vanya is ordered back home, they take a trip to Las Vegas together, where they spontaneously get married.
When his parents find out about the marriage and, above all, who their new daughter-in-law is, they are anything but happy and immediately set off for the States. They send three fellow countrymen living in the USA as their vanguard – a priest and two thugs. The trio is supposed to make sure that the marriage is annulled and that Anora disappears back to where she came from…
