GoGo Penguin, pianist Chris Ilingworth, bassist Nick Black and percussionist John Scott are a Manchester jazz trio. “Line of Best Fit”, the music reviewer of these associations, has succinctly and wittily proclaimed “British jazz” Radiohead “.
The trio describes their music as a synthesis between hand, jazz and minimalism, inspired by electronic music such as “Aphex Twin” or “Four Tet”. Their music includes breakbacks, minimalist piano melodies, strong bass lines, electronics-inspired drum parts and hymn reefs. There are many influences and references in this music, but one thing is clear – GoGo Penguin has created a new and bold sound that is ultimately unique to them.
“The intense synergy of fast-paced, pulsating, wild percussion and jumping piano loops … Pulls listeners deeper and deeper into an unusual stream,” the music media Mojo has articulated his feelings about GoGo Penguin.
The secret of GoGo Penguin is revealed to their audience. “Well-dressed jazz fans in their middle-aged twenties with casual looks, some of whom are even trying to dance,” wrote The Times music reviewer after the concert in the Albert Hall. Maybe it’s not enough for some good sworn jazz heaters, but it’s an intelligent and original turn in the story of dance music. ”
Recorded by GoGo Penguin in 2014, v2.0, released under the auspices of Gondwana Records, has been nominated for the prestigious Mercury Award for Album of the Year. These successes have encouraged listeners to increasingly experience trio performances both in Manchester, home of musicians, and to intrigue audiences outside the British Isles. This spring, GoGo Penguin hopes to embark on an ambitious, often postponed concert tour of Britain, North America and Europe.
