The Mode of Transmission and Classification of Dengue Fever Cases: Ministry of Health and Population Updates

The mode of transmission is the Aedes aegypti virus

The Ministry of Health and Population revealed that it has sent the latest definition of dengue fever cases to hospitals, in order to diagnose them quickly and deal with them professionally, out of concern for the patient and to prevent serious complications.

According to the Ministry of Health and Population, dengue fever was defined as an acute viral disease characterized by a sudden onset of fever, severe headache, muscle and joint pain, and usually a skin rash appears, and minor or major hemorrhagic manifestations may occur, and it is one of the diseases that must be reported immediately within group (A).

The Ministry of Health and Population said that the fever associated with the disease: often lasts 2: 7 days and begins with a sudden fever accompanied by nausea, severe headache, muscle and joint pain, and the number of white blood cells may decrease significantly.

The Ministry of Health and Population stated that the mode of transmission of the infection is through the bite of the infected Aedes aegypti mosquito.

Classification of cases, symptoms, signs, treatment

The Ministry of Health and Population classified the cases into 3 categories, the first being “suspected cases with simple symptoms”, whose symptoms are as follows:

1- Sudden fever in which the temperature rises for about 5 days

2- Headache

3- Nausea or vomiting

4- Muscle pain

5- Pain in the back of the eye and joint pain.

Its treatment is as follows:

1- Complete comfort

2- Proper nutrition

3- Eat plenty of fresh juice, not canned

4- Obtaining rehydration solution + treatment of symptoms of the disease with continuous follow-up

For the second category, “suspected cases with severe symptoms,” the symptoms are as follows:

1- A severe fever of 39.5 or more.

2- Abdominal pain.

3-. Abdominal pain and sensitivity to touch

4- Continuous vomiting, saline solution or Ringer’s lactate (depending on the attachment). Fluid accumulation in the chest and ascites in the abdomen can be diagnosed by ultrasound.

5- Paracetamol + symptomatic treatment + necessary examinations) suspected cases. Indications for mild bleeding are a decrease in platelets to less than 100,000.

6- The presence of clear signs of bleeding

7- Lethargy, insomnia, and enlargement of the liver

8- Increase the sedimentation rate to 20%.

The treatment is carried out according to the following protocol:

1- Paracetamol or saline solution

2- Treating symptoms and performing medical examinations

3- The patient is isolated with continuous follow-up until the symptoms disappear.

For the third category, “suspected cases with severe symptoms accompanied by shock,” the symptoms are as follows:

1- Coolness and pallor of the skin

2- A fast and weak pulse

3-Accumulation of fluid in the chest with respiratory problems

4- Severe bleeding

5- Increasing the sedimentation rate to 20%.

6- Imbalance in kidney and liver functions

7- Loss of consciousness and coma.

The treatment is carried out according to the following protocol:

1- Take intravenous solutions

2- Obtaining Dextran 70 ml

3- Treating symptoms with medical examinations

4- Admission of the patient to the intensive care unit

5- Continuous monitoring and follow-up.

And the Ministry of Health and Population said that the previous treatment must be adhered to, taking into consideration giving any other treatments according to the vision of the attending physician and according to the patient’s condition, and it is forbidden to use aspirin in the treatment of these cases.

She explained that the required examinations are:

1- Isolate the disease virus from the blood during fever or from tissues, or make a tissue culture.

2- The presence of an increase of at least four-fold in the antibodies to one or more of the dengue viruses of two blood samples.

3- The presence of immunoglobulin (IgM) means the presence of a recent infection and can be detected within 6-7 days of the onset of the disease.

4- The presence of virus nucleic acid using RT-PCR from blood or tissues.
