The mobilizations of the Barcelona taxi return to the inaction of the administrations

The mobilizations of the Barcelona taxi return to the inaction of the administrations

If Uber made the attempt to enter Barcelona once again in breach of the regulations of the Barcelona Metropolitan Area and they were left alone, Cabify’s Transport Vehicles with Driver (VTC), roam freely throughout the city without any Mossos d’esquadra, Guàrdia Urbana or inspectors from the Metropolitan Taxi Institute (IMET) punish them.

The taxi drivers have said ‘enough’ and will demonstrate this coming May 20.

The slow march will leave the Venetian Towers in the Plaza de España to continue along the Gran Vía de Les Corts Catalanes until reaching Balmes street, where it will go down towards Pelai street, Plaza de Catalunya, through Fontanella and up to Via Laietana, where will be the end point of the march with taxis.

From there, the representatives of the associations of the taxi sector will march towards the City Hall in the Plaza de Sant Jaume, to demand a meeting with the mayor of Barcelona Ada Colau and with the deputy mayor for security and head of the Urban Guàrdia, Albert Batlle.

The taxi drivers wish to convey to the municipal authorities their outrage at the lack of control over the VTCs, the constant irregularities committed by Cabify vehicles and the urgent need to implement a public app for requesting taxis in the metropolitan area of Barcelona.

It should be remembered that last March more than 5,000 taxi drivers gathered in a slow march through Barcelona to protest against the return of Uber to the city.

The demonstration, called by the majority union in the sector, began at 10 a.m. in Plaza de España and advanced along Gran Via de les Corts Catalanes and Plaza de Catalunya, until it reached the headquarters of Fomento del Trabajo, in the via Laietana.
