The Mitsotakis-Erdogan meeting in September was “drugged”. – 2024-08-24 01:12:09

Concern prevails in Maximos and more specifically in the diplomatic staff of the prime minister in view of the new meeting that Kyriakos Mitsotakis will have with Recep Tayyip Erdogan, at the end of September, on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly that will be held in New York.

In the background of the new meeting, two very issues have arisen that have worried Maximos, regarding the strategy followed by Turkey.

The challenge in Kasos and the Cyprus issue

A month ago off Kasos there was a very dangerous incident when Turkish warships allegedly prevented an Italian-flagged research vessel from completing the research it was doing on behalf of Greece. Turkey argued that the searches were carried out within the Turkish continental shelf, in order to legitimize a co-ownership regime and indeed within a demarcated maritime zone.

At the same time, the climate has also been aggravated by the continuous sharpening of Turkey’s rhetoric regarding the Cyprus issue, where Ankara systematically talks about recognizing the pseudo-state, as was also seen by the parades in the occupied territories on the day of the “black” anniversary of “Attila”.

Diplomatic sources acknowledge that new data is being produced regarding Greek-Turkish relations, because there may be the acquis of “calm waters” in the Aegean, but lately there has been a serious backsliding regarding the joint declaration of friendship signed in Athens in December 2023 There is also the possibility of organizing a preparatory meeting between Foreign Ministers Giorgos Gerapetritis and Hakan Fidan, but not in a bilateral context, but on the sidelines of an international forum in the coming weeks.

It is a given that Maximos is reevaluating Turkey’s position, as it is clear that what both countries call “constructive dialogue” is translated differently from Erdogan’s side. It is recalled that both former prime ministers and former presidents of the New Democracy, Kostas Karamanlis and Antonis Samaras, have strongly criticized Kyriakos Mitsotakis regarding the rapprochement of Greek-Turkish relations.
