It meanders through almost the entire territory of the USA on a distance of 3,778 kilometers and crosses eight states on its way from north to south – the Mississippi. As an inconspicuous mountain river, it sets off on its journey from Lake Itasca in Minnesota, joins the Missouri in St. Louis, meets the Ohio a little later in Illinois and finally flows into the Gulf of Mexico as a wide river near New Orleans. With its tributaries, the Mississippi forms the largest river system in the United States and the fourth largest in the world. But the “Old Man River” is not only impressive because of its imposing dimensions. Numerous animal species from different climate zones from temperate to subtropical – including wolves and bears, bull sharks and alligators – make the Mississippi a top-class wildlife experience for visitors. In three episodes, “The Mississippi – America’s Lifeline” takes a close look at what is probably the most fascinating river in the USA and shows what natural beauties can be discovered on the left and right banks if you look closely.
