With the beginning of the holidays, the discussion about the holiday behavior of Poles returned to the public space. This year, the main topic of discussion and jokes are vacationers who, due to inflation, have stopped dining in restaurants and come to the Baltic beaches with their own lunches, which is to be perceived as a symbolic return to the misery of the 1990s.

The discussion was started by an article on Money.pl, which, however, in its assumption (apart from a slightly flashy title) was intended to show the increase in inflation in gastronomy, and not to mock the behavior of Polish tourists. As we read: “This year, restaurateurs complain about poor traffic in the premises. Customers place smaller orders, no first course or drinks. They often skip going out with their family to restaurants in favor of meals prepared on site in boarding houses or rented houses. This is confirmed by the owners of seaside guesthouses. Dariusz Wojtal, president of the Polish Chamber of Tourism, in an interview with Money.pl also confirms that Poles are increasingly choosing to travel at cost. (…) In his opinion, we went back to the 1990s, because back then bringing your own food for holidays or cooking by yourself was common. Going out for fish or shish kebabs was an event – it took place once or twice during the whole stay.
This text was quite widely quoted and discussed, and many comments mocked tourists who, in order to save a few zlotys, go to the beach with their own meal.

It is worth recalling that for many liberal media, the beginning of the holidays means the season for pointing out the faults of Poles on holiday. A year ago, the Interia portal even created a ranking in which it pointed out the biggest holiday sins of Poles: “What annoys Poles at the seaside the most are the scandalous behavior of other holidaymakers. Some, coming to the Baltic Sea, get rid of any inhibitions, and this effectively spoils rest for other tourists. Among the problems Interia enumerated: screens off, music from loudspeakers, using profanity and drinking alcohol, playing football on crowded beaches, leaving garbage behind, defecating in bushes and cases of public sex on beaches or sunbathing topless.
In turn, the portal NaszMiasto.pl prepared a review of memes mocking Polish sunbathers. As we read: “Holidays have begun, and with them the invasion of real januses on the beaches. Large screens blocking the view of the sea? Boar skin on the sand? That’s nothing! Grażyna and Janusz on vacation can come up with things that the greatest philosophers have never dreamed of.
Of course, one cannot write about attacks on holidaying Poles without a reminder in the words of Agata Młynarska, who laid the foundations for this criticism in 2016: “There is a total armageddon in Władysławowo – all the Kiepskis with their families and friends have arrived, the food is expensive and usually bad – fish fried in oil not of the first freshness, waffles and fries reign supreme . Music is playing everywhere, in every pub men in gastronomic pregnancy are fending off their children and exhausted wives. Of course, a good brewery is essential!” – wrote a journalist years ago.

The number of clicks must match
Of course, many negative behaviors of holidaymakers should be stigmatized, but are they only a Polish specialty? Can’t we see people in resorts around the world who leave garbage behind (and here my own experience shows that Poland is an exceptionally clean country), play music too loud or use profanity? (These are less tolerated in public space in Poland than, for example, in Anglo-Saxon countries.) Are sexual excesses and topless sunbathing in places not intended for this still isolated cases in Poland, quite carefully picked up by the tabloids, but for which there is no general consent has? Is a windbreak that provides protection against the wind over the extremely windy Baltic Sea an actual reason for mockery?
In my opinion the behavior of Poles does not differ from European standards, and in most cases exceeds them (remembering, for example, the flocks of drunk tourists from Western Europe that used to pass through the largest Polish cities years ago). Plus, I don’t mind bringing food to the beach at all. Is there anything more pleasant than a homemade dinner with the family in the bosom of nature? Isn’t this the quintessence of “slow life” so propagated by numerous media?
When coming across articles attacking Polish “januszy i grażyny”, let’s keep a great distance from this type of publication. For a large part of the media, holiday time is a peak season, and especially in online media, the number of clicks must be correct. Let us not be persuaded to have national vices that do not exist, or are vices that concern people without culture all over the world. This holiday, let’s rest in the best, without unnecessary complexes.
