The Ministry of the Interior (MV) of the Slovak Republic registers 108 declared emergency situations due to the snow disaster. It also urges drivers to be more careful on the roads. Mountain rescuers warn of avalanches.
“The state of emergency for the entire district declared by the head of the district office continues to apply in Čadec, in other cases, state of emergency at the level of municipalities and towns declared by mayors or the mayori,” added Eliášová.
He reminds that heavy snow and wind during the past days mainly affected the northern and northwestern part of Slovakia. Emergency situations have been declared for impassability of local roads, difficult access to homes, shops, health centers or public transport stops or difficult supply. Electricity supplies were interrupted in several villages, the spokeswoman pointed out.
Members of the Fire and Rescue Service and volunteer firefighters intervened 300 times last Saturday. Firefighters in the Žilina region recorded the most interventions (71). According to Eliášová, firefighters removed fallen trees from roads, railway tracks, and vehicles, pulled stuck cars out of snowdrifts, intervened in traffic accidents or removed loose sheet metal on roofs.
