Promoting the learning of English among Moroccan schoolchildren is what the Ministry of National Education wants. He signed, Monday, July 26, a partnership with the British Council and the National Radio and Television Company (SNRT) for the broadcast on national radio, of a program called English Time.

These courses, which will be divided into 45 episodes of 15 minutes and intended for young people and their parents, will offer, from the next school year in September, educational capsules that can improve the level of students through the learning of skills. basic language, according to the initiators.

“This new program is part of a set of educational initiatives implemented jointly by the three parties, over the past two years, with the aim of providing digital resources for the teaching and learning of the English for Moroccan teachers, pupils and students ”, they underline.

When English seduces young people

To believe them, “the setting up of English Time on the radio is part of the Obla Air program”, designed by the British Council as part of its cooperation with the Ministry of National Education and the SNRT and following the positive feedback from teachers, learners and their families since the launch of the program and its dissemination as part of the distance education process via television and radio during the confinement period imposed by the Covid-19 pandemic ”. Many young Moroccans believe that mastering English could give them a bright future.

According to the Shift to English in Morocco report, published at the end of April 2021 by the British Council on the occasion of International English Language Day, “more than two-thirds of young Moroccans are convinced that, in the next 5 years, English will succeed in replacing French as the first foreign language in Morocco ”, and 74% of them“ think that the switch to English will benefit Morocco’s ambitions as an international business and tourism hub ”.

This survey also revealed that the three main platforms for learning English are school (37%), films / television series (25%) and finally the internet (17%). This study was carried out on 1,200 people aged between 15 and 25 years.
