“According to the situation at the hour, the city administration, the presidential residence, the Republic Square have been vacated. The buildings of all state structures are under control,” reports the TV channel “Habar 24”, referring to the Interior Ministry.
A spokesman for the city commander had previously reported dramatic events at the Almali district police department, where the official said “terrorists had been destroyed”.
Of all the regions and cities in the country, according to the Interior Ministry, the “most difficult” is still Almaty.
Kazakhstan’s Informburo media quotes the Interior Ministry as saying that the Almaty Republic Square, which had become the epicenter of the protests, was “freed from criminal groups”.
The Kazakh editorial office of Radio Brīvība reports that shots were fired at people in Republic Square.
There were people in the square who had previously taken part in various protests.
The square was mainly made up of unarmed young people, Radio Freedom quoted Aigerim Toleuzhan, a spokesman for the Democratic Party’s initiative group as saying.
Demonstrators have called for the establishment of a special crisis headquarters, the refusal to bring in Russian troops, the resignation of the government, the formation of an interim government led by civil society, the establishment of a national guard to protect the population from provocateurs and marauders.
Kazakhstan has been swept away by a large-scale protest movement, clashes between protesters and security forces have detained thousands.
Protests against the sharp rise in liquefied gas prices began on Sunday in Zhanaozen, in the southwest of the country.
Protests took over the whole of Kazakhstan in the following days, and political demands began to emerge alongside economic ones. The protesters demanded, among other things, the complete departure of former President Nursultan Nazarbayev and his clan.
Clashes between protesters and security forces began in Almaty on Tuesday.
A state of emergency has been declared throughout Kazakhstan and a curfew has been established.
The Russian-controlled military alliance of the former USSR, or the Collective Security Treaty Organization (ODKB), has sent “peacekeepers” to Kazakhstan who have already begun arriving in Kazakhstan.
