The Ministry of Health reports that there is a vaccine against monkeypox; only applies to people at risk

* Mass vaccination is not recommended at this time.

Colima, Col. – The Colima State Government Secretary of Health announced that, according to information from the World Health Organization (WHO), a vaccine has recently been approved to prevent monkeypox, although some countries recommend vaccination only for people at risk, not en masse.

He added that, after many years of research, newer and safer vaccines have been developed for an eradicated disease called smallpox, which could also be beneficial for monkeypox. In fact, one of them has been approved for the prevention of monkeypox.

However, he stressed that only people at risk should be considered for vaccination (e.g., those who have had direct contact with someone who has confirmed monkeypox) and massive vaccination at this time is not recommended.

Although the smallpox vaccine has been shown in the past to protect against monkeypox, current data on the efficacy of new vaccines against these diseases in preventing monkeypox is scarce in clinical practice and in hospital settings.

He also indicated that current knowledge on the duration of immunity after monkeypox infection is limited, so it’s unclear whether previous monkeypox infection confers immunity against future infections and, if so, for how long.

He explained that if someone has had monkeypox in the past and has it in your family now, you can protect others by being the designated caregiver, as your immunity is more likely to be greater than that of the rest of the family.
