“The Indonesian Ministry of Health will issue a press release on the polio outbreak in Indonesia on Saturday (19/11/2022),” Siti Public Service and Communication Office chief Nadia Tarmizi told reporters on Friday. (11/18/2022) evening.

What is poliomyelitis like, its symptoms and its transmission?

In the Ministry of Health website, the incubation period of the polio virus usually takes 3-6 days, and paralysis occurs within 7-21 days. Most infected people (90%) have no symptoms or symptoms are very mild and usually go unrecognized.

Symptoms of poliomyelitis

In other conditions, initial symptoms include fever, tiredness, headache, vomiting, neck stiffness, and leg pain. The symptoms of polio patients are divided into three groups, namely:

Nonparalytic polio can cause vomiting, muscle weakness, fever, meningitis, fatigue, sore throat, headache, and stiff, aching feet, hands, neck, and back.

Paralytic polio causes headache, fever, muscle weakness, weakness in the legs and arms, and loss of reflexes.

Post-polio syndrome causes difficulty breathing or swallowing, difficulty concentrating, muscle weakness, depression, sleep disturbance with difficulty breathing, fatigue, and decreased muscle mass.

Mode of transmission

Polio is spread by person-to-person contact. When a child is infected with wild poliovirus, the virus enters the body through the mouth and multiplies in the intestines. This is then excreted into the environment via faeces where it can spread rapidly through the community, especially in situations of poor hygiene and sanitation.

The virus will not be likely to infect and die if a child receives a full polio immunization. Polio can be spread when food or drink is contaminated with feces. There is also evidence that flies can passively transfer poliovirus from feces to food.

Most people infected with the polio virus have no signs of illness and never realize they have been infected. These asymptomatic people carry the virus in their guts and can “silently” spread the infection to thousands of other people. (jpg)
