Bangui (Central African Republic) – the epidemic of measles is declared in the Central African Republic by the Minister of Health, Doctor Pierre Somse, on Friday January 24, 2020 by affirming that cases of measles are reported respectively in the health regions of Bangui and Begoua as well as in the cities of Nanga-Boguila, in Ouham, Baboua and Abba in Nana-Mambere.

According to the Minister of Health, Dr Pierre Somse, thousands of children in CAR are affected with measles. The statistics are alarming. In 2018, 241 cases were recorded while 3,653 cases recorded in the period 2019 – early 2020 with 53 deaths. Several cases are reported in the northern and central provincial cities such as Paoua, Vakaga, Nana-Gribizi, Batangafo, Bocaranga, Ngaoundaye and Bambari.

In light of these indices and elements, the Ministry of Health “Officially declares the measles epidemic in the Central African Republic”. Faced with this situation, the government and its partners have already implemented a response strategy against the disease in collaboration with the World Health Organization (WHO) and the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF).

The Minister of Health urges parents to respect hygienic measures and to have their children 0-59 months vaccinated against measles. “The vaccine is the only way to fight the disease”, he said.

Measles is a contagious infectious disease that affects the respiratory tract. It causes deaths in children and young adults despite the appearance of the vaccine.
