The Ministry of Health and Population warned of the danger of injuries related to trans fats, stressing that they are behind more than 17 million deaths annually, and continued: Trans fats cause an increase in the incidence of cardiovascular diseases.

The Ministry of Health and Population said: Trans fats represent a health risk because they cause an increase in the incidence of cardiovascular disease and threaten to increase the risk of heart attacks and death.

For his part, Dr. Hossam Abdel Ghaffar, spokesman for the Ministry of Health and Population, said that the Ministry has prepared an important strategy to confront the threat of trans fats, as it has adopted a policy to make its food supplies free of industrially produced trans fats by October 2023.

Dr. Hossam Abdel Ghaffar added that the Ministry joined the World Health Organization program to rid the world of industrially produced trans fats, and pointed to the issuance of a law regulating the technical rules for the maximum limits of trans fatty acids in food and the ban on hydrogenated oils.

He pointed out that an estimated 8.39% of deaths from coronary heart disease are due to reasons related to eating trans fats, which requires efficient intervention and implementation of the government’s vision that places health at the top of the country’s priorities.

He continued: “A mandatory end to trans fats will be put in place to save the lives of more than a million people in the next 25 years. He added the Ministry’s commitment to adopting the World Health Organization REPLACE package, in addition to forming a national committee to supervise the implementation of this package, pointing out that the government issued a law regulating the rules.” “Technical maximum limits for trans fatty acids in food, with a ban on hydrogenated oils, which are the primary sources of industrially produced trans fats, along with a mandatory limit on trans fats, would save the lives of over a million people in the next 25 years.”

He explained that cardiovascular diseases represent a stumbling block in the efforts of countries towards achieving sustainable development goals related to health, noting that the burden of cardiovascular diseases does not stop at mortality rates, but also goes beyond in terms of its impact on the economy, the health care system and the quality of life in general, noting that The bill for treating cardiovascular diseases is large, and represents a great pressure on health care systems, in addition to affecting production and the economy due to premature deaths and disability resulting from heart diseases.
