The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) of the Republic of North Macedonia calls for vigilance on the part of all political stakeholders. It insists on compliance with the constitutional provisions as well as the Prespa Agreement. The information is from the Macedonian media “Thelma”.
The reason for the reaction is the behavior of the new president of the Republic of North Macedonia, Gordana Siljanovska-Davkova, upon her inauguration, which is about to become an international scandal. We remind you that Siljanovska-Davkova did not pronounce the constitutional name of the state, calling it only Macedonia. She was sworn in as president of “Macedonia,” not the Republic of North Macedonia, which is the official name of the country she is assigned as head of state.
As a sign of protest, the ambassador of Greece to the Republic of North Macedonia left the plenary hall in the parliament, during the inauguration of Siljanovska.
The behavior of Siljanovska – Davkova is not a particular surprise, since already during the election campaign she talked about canceling the Prespa agreement with Greece.
with which the country changed its name in 2019. We also recall that the agreement with Greece and the Treaty of Friendship with Bulgaria were the basis of Skopje’s admission to NATO.
“Over the past seven years, the two neighboring countries have developed an extremely high level of political dialogue, which has led to a multiple increase in economic cooperation and the building of positive people-to-people relations. These benefits led to the country’s membership in NATO, the start of negotiations with the European Union, as well as the upgrading of the Strategic Partnership into a Strategic Dialogue with the USA,” the MFA said in a statement.
From there, they call for vigilance on the part of all political actors and especially elected public officials. “Maintaining the country’s Euro-Atlantic course is a major strategic interest and guarantor of the country’s long-term security and stability,” the Foreign Ministry stated.
It is noticeable that there is a divergence in the position of the Macedonian Ministry and the newly elected Macedonian President. It is due to the fact that our southwestern neighbor is currently governed by a technical government, whose foreign minister is Buyar Osmani from the party of ethnic Albanians – DSI.
To a large extent, the reactions of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of North Macedonia are also due to the many warning reactions both from its neighbors and at the EU level.
Today, Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis reminded Skopje that it will not accept any more such mistakes.
He accused North Macedonia of violating the Prespa agreement, and warned that further violations of the 2019 name agreement signed between the two countries could jeopardize Skopje’s EU membership ambitions.
There was also a reaction from the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, and the President of the European Council, who called for compliance with the Prespa Agreement.
Our country also came out with a position stating that it does not accept statements and behavior that contradict both the Treaty of Friendship, Good Neighborliness and Cooperation of 2017 and other international treaties that the Republic of North Macedonia has signed.
