The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Bulgaria handed a note of protest to the interim head of the embassy of the Republic of Northern Macedonia Vladimir Krastevski on the occasion of an established case of replacement of a Bulgarian monument located on the territory of our southwestern neighbor.
At a meeting held today at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Vanya Andreeva, Director of the Southeast Europe Directorate, informed the representative of the Republic of Northern Macedonia in Bulgaria that Bulgaria’s diplomatic mission in Skopje has established that the churchyard in the village of Klepach The Republic of Northern Macedonia, a monument erected in honor of Duke Velko Skocivircheto and eight of his guerrillas who died in battle with Ottoman forces in 1904, has been replaced.
It was established that the original inscription in literary Bulgarian had been replaced, whole parts of the authentic text had been removed and some of the names of the killed rebels had been changed.
During the conversation, the Bulgarian side insisted on taking the necessary actions by the competent authorities of the Republic of Northern Macedonia to search for and restore the original monument.
It was emphasized that the replacement of historical artifacts is an act of destruction of the authentic cultural heritage and an attempt to rewrite history, which raises serious concerns, including in the context of the need for strict implementation of the 2017 Treaty of Friendship, Good Neighborliness and Cooperation г.
