A reporter asked: Last night, President Xi Jinping was invited to attend the BRICS leaders’ special video summit on the Palestinian-Israeli issue and delivered an important speech. Can the speaker introduce the meeting and results?

Mao Ning: BRICS is an important platform for emerging markets and developing countries to strengthen unity and cooperation and safeguard common interests. This meeting is the first leadership meeting after the BRICS made the decision to expand its membership. It is also an important meeting held by the BRICS countries at a critical moment when the Palestinian-Israeli conflict escalates.

President Xi Jinping delivered an important speech at the meeting, focusing on explaining China’s position on the Palestinian-Israeli issue, pointing out that the top priority is to immediately cease fire and end the war, ensure the safety and smoothness of humanitarian relief channels, and prevent the expansion of the conflict. President Xi Jinping profoundly pointed out that the fundamental way to resolve the recurring conflict between Palestine and Israel is to implement the “two-state solution.” Without an unfair solution to the Palestinian issue, there will be no lasting peace and stability in the Middle East. China calls for a more authoritative international peace conference to be convened as soon as possible to build international consensus on promoting peace and promote an early comprehensive, just and lasting solution to the Palestinian issue. President Xi Jinping also introduced China’s efforts since the outbreak of the conflict to promote peace talks and ease the humanitarian situation in Gaza.

President Xi Jinping’s speech took both the present and the long-term into consideration and set a clear direction for effectively resolving the Palestinian-Israeli issue. All parties participating in the meeting highly agreed and thanked China for promoting the adoption of Resolution 2712 as the rotating presidency of the United Nations Security Council this month. They emphasized that the international community should effectively implement the relevant resolutions, promote the realization of a lasting and sustainable humanitarian truce, and ensure comprehensive, immediate, and inviolable obstacles and sustainable humanitarian access, resolve differences and disputes through dialogue and inclusive consultation, prevent the escalation of violence in the Middle East, and avoid conflict spillover.

As President Xi Jinping said, under the current situation, the BRICS countries have issued a voice of justice and peace on the Palestinian-Israeli issue, which is very timely and necessary. It has also made a good start for the “Greater BRICS Cooperation” after the expansion of membership. China looks forward to continuing to work with BRICS member states to promote ceasefires and wars and achieve lasting peace in the Middle East.
