The Ministry of Education will distribute up to 250 million crowns to schools for tutoring children

Elementary schools will receive about 150 to 740 crowns per child. Secondary schools will receive around 150 crowns per pupil to support their final years, said Aneta Lednová, a spokeswoman for the Ministry of Education (MŠMT). According to her, the office also plans to launch a website for tutoring and from January 2022 it expects three billion crowns from the National Recovery Plan.

“Schools can use the funds mainly for tutoring needy pupils, but also for adaptation and socialization activities for wider groups of pupils. Tutoring can be taken not only by teachers from the given schools, but also by students from faculties preparing future teachers, ”said Plaga.

Schools were closed for several months this school year and in the second half of last school year due to the covid-19 epidemic, and pupils were required to teach at a distance. According to a survey by the Czech School Inspectorate, about 50,000 children did not participate in online teaching in the spring, and around 11,000 pupils, ie about one percent of all primary schools, did not participate in distance education at all, according to the ministry.

According to Ledová, the Office will provide financial support for tutoring to all approximately 4,200 primary and 1,300 secondary schools, depending on the total number of pupils and the share of children with difficulties in distance learning.

The basic amount per child will be about 150 to 740 crowns. According to her, 905 primary schools will receive more money per pupil, which the office and school inspectorate identified as the ones most affected by the epidemic. They are mainly in poor localities of the Ústí nad Labem, Karlovy Vary and Moravian-Silesian regions. Secondary schools and conservatories, where there will be help for final years, will receive 150 crowns per pupil, the spokeswoman added.

According to her, the ministry will send money to the regions in the summer so that they can distribute it to schools before the start of the school year. There will be a grant program for private and church schools. “At the same time, we expect maximum support from schools in the form of extensive methodological support from the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports in cooperation with the National Pedagogical Institute and the non-profit sector,” said Plaga. He wants to launch a web platform with instructions and inspiration for working with students before September.

In the summer, so-called tutoring camps are to take place, which could cost about 260 million crowns. According to the Minister, their goal is not only to catch up with knowledge, but especially to support the mental health of schoolchildren from poor families who otherwise cannot afford to pay for the camp. Participation in the camps will be free for children. The Minister has previously stated that inequalities in education due to distance learning will be offset by tutoring for another two to three years.

According to Lednice, from the beginning of 2022 to the end of the school year 2022/2023, autumn tutoring will be followed by a school support program from the National Renewal Plan with three billion crowns.
