Already received weapons of the Armed Forces of Ukraine would be enough to defend against any army in Europe, but not the Russian one, says Reznikov.
Ukraine continues to receive Western weapons, but they are still not enough. What exactly do the Armed Forces of Ukraine need to confront the Russian invaders, said Defense Minister Alexei Reznikov on Thursday, June 9.
“We have already received from partners, purchased on the market, manufactured and handed over to the armed forces a significant amount of weapons. It would be enough for a victorious defense against any army in Europe. But not from Russia … Therefore, we emphasize that Ukraine really needs heavy weapons, and very quickly,” he said.
Reznikov named the goals of Ukraine in arms:
-
receive a significant amount of NATO-style MLRS and ammunition for them;
-
ensure the complete replacement of some existing Soviet-style calibers (guns are worn out, shells are not produced or there are very few of them) with platforms common in NATO countries and supplied with ammunition;
-
agree with partners on the transition to delivery not in the form of separate platforms, but in the form of integral units that are ready to perform combat missions (organic unit). This will greatly increase efficiency in the battlefield;
-
attract hundreds of units of heavy armored vehicles, without which an effective counteroffensive is impossible. It should be borne in mind that Soviet equipment is mostly outdated and needs to be brought into combat condition. And from partners, we still get fairly light armor, not always with weapons;
-
get combat aircraft and air defense / missile defense systems to protect our skies.
“I cannot say that I am satisfied with the pace and quantity of the supply of weapons. Absolutely not.
But at the same time, I am grateful to the countries that support us. In particular, the USA, Great Britain, Poland, our Baltic friends. To all other states helping to contain the Russian evil,” the defense minister wrote.
He also said that the Ukrainian military is being trained to use the already received weapons.
“I would like to note that our soldiers have been learning to manage them for some time… Training in some positions began in March. More than 1,500 of our military men are now undergoing training or will begin in the near future,” Reznikov said.
Recall that on June 1, US President Joe Biden approved new military aid package for Ukraine in the amount of 700 million dollars.
