The Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries of the Government of the Canary Islands makes various professional courses related to the primary sector available to interested persons throughout the year. In the month of April, eight face-to-face, semi-face-to-face or online courses are offered, and registration is open up to seven days before the start of each course.
The General Director of Agriculture, Augusto Hernández, reaffirms that the regional Executive “is making a firm commitment to train future generations of the primary sector, as well as the opportunity of professionalization for those people who are already dedicating their lives to agriculture. and livestock”.
“Training allows us not only to create new opportunities for workers in the primary sector, but also to empower the rural youth population and guarantee generational change,” says Hernández.
Currently, from March 28 to April 17, the Escuela de Capacitación Agraria (ECA) in Tacoronte, Tenerife, is developing an online course on papaya cultivation, where the general characteristics of the plant and its varieties, as well as the most important cultural practices (planting frameworks, fertilization, irrigation, phytosanitary treatments, etc.) and special cultivation practices.
Also, online, training in ‘Ecological self-sufficiency agriculture’ will be held from April 18 to 29, which shows a scheme to follow to move from abandoned or unproductive land to cultivated land that allows self-sufficiency.
The general director of Agriculture explains that, given the changing needs of the beekeeping production system, an introductory course in beekeeping is being offered from April 25 to 29, “with the aim of incorporating new professionals into this sector.”
At the Arucas Agricultural Training School, in Gran Canaria, the course ‘Localized irrigation installations’ will be given on April 18, 19, 20, 25 and 26, with the aim of publicizing the different irrigation systems existing in the market, and their use both in small farms and in large farmlands, as well as informing about the management of water in the different types of crops and their tasks.
Another course in this center, an online edition, will deal with ‘Ecological soil management’ to raise awareness of the complexity of the soil as a system and the importance of maintaining its health; It will take place from April 18 to 29.
In the Agricultural Training School of Los Llanos de Aridane, in La Palma, a blended course will be taught, from April 18 to 22, on ‘Gardening and landscaping against climate change’, to train in knowledge about the history of the gardens; ornamental plants; its morphology and climatic requirements; the irrigation network; and maintenance techniques and execution of gardening and landscaping works. In addition, at the Los Llanos de Aridane ECA, an online course will be held from April 18 to 20, in which the different species of natural enemies that are currently being used in banana pest control will be studied.
Also, in this palm center, from April 25 to 29, a training course will be developed in basic handling for the use of a chainsaw, using the specific protection equipment, as well as the cutting techniques that facilitate the work in a safe and effective way to better performance.
