The general director of Agricultural Productions and Markets, Esperanza Orellana, participated today in the high-level segment of the fourth edition of the “4 per 1000” Initiative Day, where she reiterated the commitment of the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food to the protection of agricultural soils as a fundamental element for food supply, care for the environment and the fight against climate change.
For this, Orellana has pointed out that the MAPA is preparing a royal decree that will establish for the first time rules to regulate sustainable nutrition in agricultural soils, in line with the objectives of the Initiative “4 per 1000”, of which Spain forms part since its foundation in 2015.
This regulation is part of a broader package that will implement other mechanisms to guarantee the protection and good health of soils, as required by the “From Farm to Table” Strategy of the European Union.
Likewise, the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) proposes to provide technical and financial instruments to farmers so that, through innovative support tools, such as eco-schemes, they advance in practices that improve the structure and content of manure and organic fertilizers in their fertilization work, which facilitates the development of a circular economy model.
Orellana has also pointed out that these legislative initiatives will promote the training and advice of farmers, so that they have the necessary knowledge and make use of new technologies to promote soil health.
INITIATIVE 4 PER 1000
During her speech, the Director General highlighted the irreplaceable role of agricultural soils to guarantee food sovereignty. In this framework, the work of the “4 per 1000” Initiative forms a winning strategy that, by increasing organic carbon in soils, improves its structure and productivity, increases biodiversity and prevents erosion, while making it carbon sink that mitigates global warming.
As detailed, “this process creates resilient agri-food systems, which are also capable of improving the environmental conditions in which we live.”
In addition, Orellana has emphasized the necessary link between the scientific process and the activities of this initiative, and recalled that the common objective is to “promote the determining role of agricultural soils in the well-being of society, fighting climate change and guaranteeing safety food ”.
