(Agence Ecofin) – Elected in June 2020, President Lazarus Chakwera made the fight against corruption one of his main projects. While covid-19 has increased spending to support the economy, the leader launched an audit on the management of funds allocated for this purpose.
Malawi Labor Minister Ken Kandodo (pictured) was relieved of his post last week in connection with an embezzlement case. This was announced on Sunday April 18, the President of the Republic Lazarus Chakwera quoted by the press agency Reuters.
According to the leader, an audit on the management of nearly $ 8 million intended for the coronavirus response program found that the minister had made a ” wrong use “ funds. According to the findings of the investigation, part of the funding has disappeared. Ken Kandodo, for example, would have used nearly $ 780 to finance a trip to South Africa.
This dismissal is an illustration of the resolutely anti-corruption orientation that President Chakwera wanted to give to his presidency, since coming to power in June 2020. During the election campaigns, he had made this theme one of his main social projects in the face of former president Peter Mutharika, whose management he criticized.
A total of 14 other officials were arrested in connection with the case.
« There are no sacred cows. If the finger of proof points to you […] you will go to jail Said President Lazarus Chakwera.
