This was stated by Justice Minister Nadezhda Yordanova in the studio of “Hello, Bulgaria” on Nova TV. However, it is not yet known whether the collected materials will be sufficient, this must be judged by the SJC. In order to be released, however, it is not required that the violations be crimes, Yordanova specified.
“According to the European standard, the prosecutor acts in the name of the public, does the current chief prosecutor act in the name of the public? We continue to witness how certain cases are dismissed – what happens to the bullion, the banknotes, do we have expertise on the reliability of the records?” asked the minister .
She stated that no concrete talks have yet been held about who will head the Anti-Corruption Commission after its chairman Sotir Tsatsarov resigns and after the body is split in two. “Yes, personality, moral and professional characteristics are important, but more important is the structural profile of these bodies and what kind of protection of citizens’ rights they will provide. The current commission continues to serve as a club for the inconvenient and a doormat for the comfortable,” Yordanova was emphatic .
According to her, DB has been saying for years that KPCONPI should be divided, and over time she has grown in her views on the extent to which the anti-corruption commission should have investigative functions. Her functions should be strengthened – for example, she has the right to use the CPCs, but they cannot be used in court, which is a contradiction.
When asked how the governing coalition will ensure that with the replacement of the current chief prosecutor, another will not come in his place, who also serves as an umbrella for the current rulers, Yordanova emphasized that for DB the problem is not only in the personality of the chief prosecutor, but and that there is no effective mechanism for holding him accountable. Options for how to do this were still being considered.
The Ministry of the Interior will not be able to bypass the prosecutor’s office and only initiate pre-trial proceedings. The prosecutor’s office will be notified and has the right to refuse, in which case the matter will be decided in court.
In the past year, there were 3,244 protection orders issued due to domestic violence, Yordanova also pointed out and listed some of the legislative proposals being prepared on this topic – expanding the range of prohibitions when there is a threat – of any contacts, including by phone and the Internet, expanding of child protection programs, mandatory inclusion of abusers in programs to deal with anger and aggression.
