The Minister of Health of Tucumán Confirms Availability of Dengue Vaccine in Private Vaccination Center

The Minister of Health of Tucumán, Luis Medina Ruiz, spoke on LV12 and confirmed that the vaccine is in the province in a private vaccination center. “At the national level, the decision to acquire the vaccine is through the Ministry of Health of the Nation. It is not yet incorporated into the calendar and the acquisition, purchase and distribution at the country level is not planned. But it is already available in the world and in Argentina it is an approved vaccine“explained the official.

The minister explained that there are two doses. “One is given and the second dose is given three months later,” he said. “It costs $100 each dose,” he added. He clarified “that all vaccines given by the Ministry of Health of the province and the Nation are free, it is done separately.”

Incorporation into the national calendar

Medina Ruiz asserted that “It is probable” that the dengue vaccine be incorporated into the national calendar. “It is a safe vaccine. On the 13th of this month there is a meeting of ministers in Buenos Aires and surely a decision will be made there”he expressed.

Prevention work against dengue continues

“We have not stopped working on dengue, our last case was on August 1. We are continually monitoring and studying people who have symptoms. Weekly there are between 15 to 18 people who have fever, body pain and so on, that are discarded. One always has to work on prevention. It is prevented by early detection.”assured the doctor.

Furthermore, he pointed out that “We have mosquitoes, less population because there is work and awareness among the population”. He added that they follow closely what is happening in countries like Paraguay, Bolivia and Brazil where there are many cases and where dengue is endemic. “It is very important that we work on eliminating mosquitoes, which is a much more important decision and strategy than even the vaccine. Because to vaccinate we should vaccinate the entire population. And it is complicated. This vaccine has the peculiarity that it is only given to “Over 4 years of age, it cannot be placed on people with immunodeficiency, nor on pregnant women. Therefore, the most important strategy against dengue is to eliminate mosquitoes.”he explained.

Work against dengue in the capital of Tucumán

Medina Ruiz recalled that there was a very important outbreak this past summer and where the greatest difficulty occurred in San Miguel de Tucumán. In that sense, he said that they were able to control different outbreaks in other municipalities such as Lules, Banda del Río Salí or Alderetes, working jointly with local governments..

“In the capital we have had difficulties. The good news is that there is a new sign. Not only that, but the doctor Rossana Chahla (new mayor of the capital) knows about this, knows what needs to be done. And the engineer who is going to be in charge of this type of strategies is someone who came out of the Ministry of Health, Julieta Migilavaccaso we are practically going to work together”closed the minister.
