The Minister of Health Geneviève Darrieussecq said she was in favor on Saturday October 26 of a tax on processed sugars while the Social Security budget will be debated Monday in the Assembly, the executive hoping to achieve nearly 5 billion euros from savings in health. In an interview given to La Tribune Sundaythe minister assures that “it is not a question of penalizing artisans, pastry chefs, etc. (…). But yes, I am in favor of taxes on processed sugars,” she assured.

In the Social Affairs Committee this week, deputies continued to largely rewrite the draft Social Security budget for 2025. To better “prevent” chronic illnesses and addictions, the committee validated several new taxes, notably on beers. flavored and sweetened, beers with a “high alcoholic strength”, an extension to all alcohols of the “social security contribution” or even a tax linked to the sugar content of processed food products.
Changes at this stage are very uncertain, since the bill in its entirety was then rejected by the committee and the deputies will start again next week, in the hemicycle, from the government’s initial text. The deputies had tabled more than 2,200 amendments to the Social Security budget on Friday, with a view to debates in public session.
Fewer reimbursements for consultations
Another option presented by the government to save money: lower the reimbursement rate for medical consultations by Social Security from 70% to 60%. The difference could automatically increase the cost of mutual insurance and therefore the price to be paid by the French for their health expenses.

“Personally, I think a 10% drop is significant. I have been working since my appointment to reduce this impact,” assures the minister in La Tribune Sunday. “I am open to other options, provided that they guarantee the same financial balance”, she continues, saying she is “very attentive to the impact on the purchasing power of the most modest”.
“It is certain that discussions with complementary insurers will continue to moderate the increase in contributions,” said Ms. Darrieussecq, calling “the complementary insurers to be responsible”.
