The big city attracts small means of transport, a symbol of alternative and sustainable mobility, for a speech on two wheels that now dusts off the other side of the coin: safety. This is mainly due to electric scooters, involved in 46 serious accidents on a national scale between January and April, also protagonists of alleged fatal investments such as the one that occurred to an 88-year-old Milanese lady at the end of January on a sidewalk in Viale Zara. A rather divisive trendy vector, which is rehabilitating the mistreated cyclists, that is, the historic public enemy of motorists in the pre-Covid era. Because today the road seems to have a more presumptuous master: the feet on the platform, the hands on the handlebars, the zigzagging pace.

Thanks to the large park monopattini in sharing (almost 6 thousand shared vehicles managed by seven operators), to which are added the growing sales, the Lombard capital exited from 2020 with 273 category claims, the highest figure among the Italian metropolises, but at least it has seen a decrease in bicycle accidents: 961. Numbers that worry the Region, in particular Riccardo De Corato, the councilor for safety, who calls for a law to make helmet, license plate and insurance also for those traveling on a scooter.

Insurance companies have already moved, launching multi-risk policies both annual and for a few days, therefore disposable, to protect the diverse population of alternative (multiform) mobility. By also entering into agreements with the sharing scooter companies, including the Italian-American Helbiz (1,500 rides per day), now partner of the digital intermediary Yolo: To propose the first package against accidents during rental via the app, an offer available even for those who own a vehicle.

The cost of the premium depends on the selected coverages. Altroconsumo, on the Yolo website, simulated the purchase of a daily insurance for a bicycle, opting for all the guarantees, from medical expenses to civil liability to reimbursement for theft of luggage, bags and devices: € 4.41 the price total. On the other hand, those who travel on a scooter or e-scooter from Swapfiets, the world’s first long-term bicycle rental company, have already included in their subscription coverage for civil liability, the result of a synergy with Allianz Partners.

The annual policies, suitable for lovers of micro-mobility, cover several means of transport (bicycle, scooter, scooter), and can be extended to the entire family unit. the case of the online products of 24h Assistance, whose premiums start from 39 euros for the silver package and reach 144 euros for the platinum one, where the company insures accident costs and reimbursement of deductibles and rentals. Ibl Banca, with TraffiGo (from 88 to 213 euros), also offers legal protection for damage suffered as a pedestrian, cyclist or passenger. Axa does the same. however, it is useful to check the insurances already subscribed to avoid duplication – advises the consumer association -, because a motor liability policy could already include coverage for different means.
