We still have to wait a little while until the film is released. But it will be released in April next year: “A Minecraft moviewill be released in cinemas on April 3, 2025.

This is what lies behind the Minecraft phenomenon

Minecraft was originally developed by Swedish programmer Markus “Notch” Persson and first released as an alpha version on May 17, 2009. The idea behind the game was to create a world where players could build and mine by arranging and manipulating blocks. Notch was inspired by games like Infiniminer and Dwarf Fortress In the early days, Minecraft quickly developed a small but growing community, which encouraged the developer to push the project further.

In 2010, Persson left his job and founded the company Mojang to continue developing Minecraft. The game went through various development phases and the full version was released on November 18, 2011. During this time, Minecraft gained enormous popularity. The sandbox gameplay, in which players can search for resources, build structures and be creative in an open world, appealed to a wide audience.

Another important milestone was the introduction of Survival Mode, in which players must collect resources and fight creatures to survive. This mode greatly enhanced the gaming experience, requiring a mix of strategy, skill and creativity.

In September 2014, Mojang was acquired by Microsoft for $2.5 billion, taking Minecraft’s success to a new level. Microsoft recognized the game’s potential and was committed to its global distribution. With the acquisition, the expansion to various platforms began, including consoles, mobile devices and VR systems.

Since the takeover, Minecraft has been continuously expanded. Updates such as the “Nether Update” or the “Caves & Cliffs” update brought new game mechanics, biomes, creatures and blocks into the game. The multiplayer aspect also continued to grow, particularly through servers and communities. Creative and adventure modes as well as countless mods from the player community have made the game diverse over the years.

Minecraft has become a cultural phenomenon, not only played by millions of people around the world, but also applied in education, architecture and art. Thanks to its openness and flexibility, the game is now one of the best-selling video games in history, with over 238 million copies sold as of 2023.
