The mine hunter Tajo is saying goodbye to the Cartagena Arsenal to join the permanent NATO group

CARTAGENA. The M-36 ‘Tajo’ sails from Arsenal Cartagena to begin its use in Operation ‘Noble Shield’ integrated into one of NATO’s permanent groups, countermine measures group number 2 (SNMCMG-2).

The participation of the ‘Tajo’ in these operations strengthens the national commitment to the mission of prevention and shared protection, and contributes to the unity and interaction of NATO forces. With the participation of this unit in the Alliance group, the vision of a modern, technologically advanced, well-trained Navy is demonstrated with the will to protect national interests when called upon.

In the coming months this Group will be sailing in the waters of the Mediterranean Sea, carrying out anti-mine operations to guarantee freedom of navigation, and participating in multinational exercises to increase availability and preparation. In addition, when it is used it will contribute to Operation ‘Sea Guardian’, whose main objective is the fight against illegal activities at sea.

The ‘Tajo’, commanded by Lieutenant Commander Gonzalo Muñoz-Delgado Pérez, forms the sixth unit of the Navy’s ‘Segura’ class mine hunters. During this mission, his support, including UBMCM staff and a nursing officer, will consist of 46 people, men and women who will be a team that specifically searches, ‘ classification and destruction / neutralization of marine mines. To do this, variable depth sonar and two underwater vehicles are the main means of accomplishing these tasks.

It was launched in 2004 and delivered to the Navy on January 10, 2005. Since then it has participated in multiple national and international operations and exercises related to the war zone. This is the seventh integration into the SNMCMG-2.
