The Military Junta Accuses UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres of Obstructing Niger’s Participation in UN General Assembly

The military junta that came to power in Niger following a coup carried out at the end of July denounced on Friday the “treacherous actions” of UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, accusing him of “obstructing” the participation of the council’s representative in the UN General Assembly.

The military junta said in a statement read on public television, “The National Council for the Defense of the Homeland and the government of the Republic of Niger call on the local and international community to bear witness to the treacherous actions of the Secretary-General of the United Nations, Antonio Guterres, which would undermine any effort to end the crisis in our country.”

The Council considered that Guterres “committed a mistake in exercising his mission, by obstructing Niger’s full participation in the 78th session of the United Nations General Assembly.”

The Council added in its statement that Niger “strongly rejects and condemns this clear interference by Guterres in the internal affairs of a sovereign state,” denouncing “the complicity of France and two heads of French-speaking countries” in West Africa, without naming them.
