The migration crisis “will destroy New York”, assured Eric Adams, Democratic mayor of the American megalopolis which receives more than 10,000 new economic migrants and asylum seekers per month, remarks strongly criticized by associations Thursday. “Never in my life had I faced a problem that I saw no end to. I see no end to this, ”he said Wednesday evening during a public debate.
In a year and a half, more than 110,000 migrants have arrived in the American megalopolis of 8.5 million inhabitants. Some have been sent by Republican governors, who charter buses or planes to send migrants to Democratic strongholds like New York, Washington or Los Angeles.
In the United States, immigration is a hot political issue, with conservatives taking every opportunity to accuse Democratic President Joe Biden of sieving the border with Mexico. New York, by law, is required to provide shelter, food, and care to anyone seeking asylum.
Limited resources
Eric Adams, a former African-American police officer, insistently calls for help from the federal government to deal with this migration crisis. “New Yorkers’ compassion may be limitless, but our resources are not,” he said in August.
But his remarks on Wednesday earned him strong criticism from associations defending the rights of migrants. The New York Immigration Coalition accused him on Thursday of “blaming the mismanagement of newcomers…on vulnerable people seeking safety and opportunity.”
“This dangerous speech is something that one would expect from a far-right politician,” reacted the Coalition for the Homeless and Legal Aid Society associations in a joint press release. The comments of the aedile “aim to create fear in an irresponsible way”, they declared.
