The middle class is dying out – the Opel Insignia is also leaving

Opel has announced that it will stop production of the mid-range model Insignia this year, which was previously planned only in 2024.

Two years earlier than previously planned, Opel will end the production of the Insignia model, adding to the list of middle-class “departees” of the European market, which recently included such names as Renault Talisman, Toyota Camry and Ford Mondeo.

Opel Insignia in its current form was launched in 2017, becoming the last model developed together with General Motors in Opel’s offer. Modernization followed in 2020, but this was not reflected in the sales figures – in 2021, only 12,700 copies were sold in Germany.

Insignia’s twin brother – Buick Regal – left the assembly line already in 2020. There is still a Chinese modification of the Insignia, but it is made in China and lives its life there.

Opel has already announced that the freed up capacity at the Risselsheim plant will be directed to the production of the Astra and its DS4 counterpart.

No direct successor to the Insignia is planned. Earlier it was mentioned that it will be replaced by a crossover of a similar format in 2024, but now we see that Opel has changed its plans.

Therefore, only two middle-class models remain on the European market, which will expect a change of generations in 2023. They are the Škoda Superb and the Volkswagen Passat, although the latter will only be available as a station wagon.
