The Mexican Government will protect delivery drivers with Social Security through a digital application

MEXICO, Oct. 16 (Xinhua) — Mexico‘s president, Claudia Sheinbaum, presented today, Wednesday, an initiative to reform the Federal Labor Law (LFT) so that people delivering on digital platforms have Social Security and even targeting her credit to buy housing.

The president of Mexico explained at her morning conference, before she signed the proposal to be sent to Congress, that the goal is “to manage and allow workers to deliver their rights be protected by law.”

“This almost does not exist in any country” and “it is part of what we think in the Fourth Transformation. A scheme of work cannot be outside the law, it must be to be included in the Federal Labor Law,” he said.

Sheinbaum explained in this sense that what is sought, according to the law, is that delivery workers “have the right to distribute profits, they have the right to be treated by Social Security in the event of an accident they have the right. to social security if they were working full-time.”

He clarified that once reviewed and approved by Congress, the rule will apply to workers who work two hours a day and may benefit more than 600,000 people, as well as their families throughout the Republic of Mexico.

Then, the Secretary (Minister) of Labor and Social Security, Marath Bolaños, specified in his speech that workers who have social security are those who generate more than one minimum wage and that those who do not meet it will be able to register as self-employed.

Bolaños insisted that these workers will be covered for occupational hazards, illnesses, disabilities, maternity and even for the use of day care, as well as being able to access a home loan “as an employee (formal ) any other.”

The initiative adds a chapter to the LFT that regulates work activities on digital platforms for drivers and delivery people.

In Mexico, about 658,000 people are employed on digital platforms and of this universe some 272,000, which is equal to 41 percent, receive an income equal to or higher than the monthly minimum wage, which is set at just over 248 pesos per day (more than 12 dollars ), according to data from the Tax Administration Service.
