The Meuse on alert: a new campaign to prevent African swine fever

Since mid-June, Germany reported more than 70 new cases of African swine fever in wild boars near Frankfurt. Northern Italy, not far from the French border, also has many cases. This is why the prefecture of Meuse calls on residents to be vigilant.

A virus that is harmless to humans but persistent

Although harmless to humans, African swine fever is proving extremely contagious and often fatale for the populations de porcswhich leads to catastrophic economic losses for farmers and the entire pork industry.

The virus has a long life expectancyeven in meat and sausage products. Thus, the Meuse prefecture calls for increased vigilance regarding the importation of pork or wild boar-based foods from infected areas.

Preventive measures

The prevention campaign implemented targets several key groups:

International Carriers: they must properly dispose of leftover meals in closed bins to prevent wild boars from consuming them. After each pig transport, rigorous cleaning and disinfection of vehicles is imperative.
Seasonal workers : they are advised to throw away leftover pork-based food in closed bins provided for this purpose.

Users of nature: hikers crossing foreign areas are asked to respect the same cleanliness instructions to avoid any contamination.

The prefecture is thus addressing the chunters, walkers, and breeders of pigs or wild boarsAny suspicion of illness should be reported immediately to a veterinarian.
