With the Mets on the line, the Los Angeles Dodgers had the opportunity to return to the World Series for the first time since 2020. But the players of the New York team made their bats do the talking early in the game, Friday at Citi Field, to cut the lead to 3-2 in the National League Championship Series with a 12-6 win.
Pete Alonso set the tone in the bottom of the first inning by hitting a three-run homer. The third inning was then particularly productive for the Mets: a double from Starling Marte, singles from Francisco Alvarez and Brandon Nimmo as well as a triple from Francisco Lindor on a grounder brought the score to 8 to 1.
The slope quickly became quite steep to climb back up for the Dodgers, who nevertheless made a good effort to get back into the match.
Andy Page and Mookie Betts threw the ball into the stands at the start of the fifth and sixth innings respectively, so the gap was only four points, at 10 to 6.
The Mets held on. Reliever Edwin Diaz notably imposed himself in a critical moment at the start of the eighth inning by retiring superstar Shohei Ohtani on three strikes.
The Dodgers will have another opportunity to advance to the World Series on Sunday, this time in front of their home crowd at Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles.
