NEW YORK (AP) – The game between the New York Mets and the Atlanta Braves was postponed due to a rain forecast Friday night.
Two inches of rain is expected two hours before the first pitch. A recovery date has not been announced.
The starting players scheduled for Friday, Taijuan Walker of the Mets (3-1, 2.05 ERA) and Ian Anderson of the Braves (4-1, 2.82 ERA), were postponed to Saturday. Rain is forecast throughout the weekend.
This series is the Braves’ first three visits to New York.
The Mets have played 44 games, the league-low, and are ready to play double games against the Washington Nationals and the Philadelphia Bliss in June and nine innings against the Nations.
Mets manager Luis Rojas said he hopes to focus on Friday’s game during the July 26-29 series between the teams at City Field.
Rojas isn’t sure if the Mets will pick David Peterson or Jacob Dickrom on Sunday. Peterson is scheduled to start on Saturday. Rojas will go to Dikrom if he decides to use the ace on his usual five-day break.
Rojas also said that first pacemaker Pete Alonso (right arm sprain) is progressing well. The manager said Alonso, one of the 17 Mets on the disabled list, initially thought he needed rehab work. However, the 2019 rookie winner said: “It’s much better than I expected.”
The Mets will have to move a roster before Saturday’s game, as Walker remains an official on the disabled list due to stiffness on the right side.
The Braves put outfielder Marcel Hosuna on the disabled list Friday and called up Triple-A Quinnet’s Johan Kamarko. Sliding to the third floor Wednesday night, Hosuna is expected to miss six weeks breaking the middle and ring fingers on her left hand.
The two-day postponement is the second time the Mets have beaten a Colorado Rockies doubleheader on Thursday. The Braves had a second day off after finishing the two-game 9-5 series in Boston on Wednesday.
