The Métropole de Lyon structures its agricultural policy

In an ultra-urbanized territory where the number of farmers has fallen by 44% in 20 years, pursuing a policy of supporting agriculture may seem anachronistic. The Métropole de Lyon nevertheless says it is ready to take up the challenge.

To do this, it intends to create the conditions for the development of “a virtuous policy in agriculture”, by focusing on organic productions. Three major issues guide its action. First, a race towards healthier food. Then the variation of environmental concerns, in particular to preserve qualitative water resources while it observes pollution by pesticides of certain catchment fields. Finally, the desire to maintain and create jobs in the agricultural sector. “We are quadrupling the metropolitan agricultural policy budget by raising it to 10 million euros”, announces Bruno Bernard, the president of Greater Lyon.
