The MetroCard, the essential subway card in New York

Paris has the Navigo pass, New York has the MetroCard! Here’s what you need to know about the metro and bus travel card.

What to know about the Unlimited Ride MetroCard

  • To get around New York quickly, nothing beats public transport, buses and especially the metro! To be able to use them freely, without having to permanently buy single tickets, I advise you to buy the card called “Unlimited Ride MetroCard”, equivalent to the Navigo pass in Paris.
  • The Unlimited Ride MetroCard is valid for 7 days and it costs $33 in September 2021 (the price has not increased since 2019). For this fare, you can take unlimited buses and subways in New York. No need to buy single tickets.
  • The MetroCard is practical but above all very economical! The price of the single ticket is effectively $3. Do the math: your 7-day MetroCard pays for itself after the 11th journey. However, 11 trips in a week, that’s not even 2 trips a day. I guarantee you will do much more! 🙂

A few things to know

  • The MetroCard cannot be purchased in advance. You will therefore have to buy it in New York, in a subway station. A tip if you don’t speak English and you don’t want to confront the counter clerk: use the vending machines that are accessible in French. 😉 See Smain’s demo!
  • The validity of the MetroCard begins at the time of first use. I therefore advise you to start using it the first morning of your arrival, to optimize its use. If you want to take the metro or the bus the day of your arrival, I advise you to buy a single ticket: what’s the point of paying for unlimited tickets if you’re only making one trip? 😉
  • The MetroCard is valid for riding the Roosevelt Island cable car. An unusual trip to do absolutely!
  • On the price of the MetroCard, $1 is the price of the card itself. The card is reusable! If you return to New York the following year, you can therefore use your MetroCard again and pay only for the pass. What save $1. Free coffee! 🙂
  • In any case, don’t throw away your MetroCard: it’s a nice souvenir to have in your wallet when you return from New York! 🙂
