Following the meteorite impact on December 24, 2021, a magnitude 4 earthquake occurred in the NASA Insight vehicle.
By stating that this large crater is unprecedented, the researchers thought they could get more information about Mars. While the scientists said the crater they discovered is an exciting moment in the history of geology, they stressed that they will continue their research.
It was claimed that the meteor was between 5 and 12 meters wide. It is claimed that when it hit the planet, it launched a meteor and debris up to 37 kilometers away from the crater, exposing layers below the surface.
In addition to the impact of the meteor, which revealed a huge crater, seismic waves also appeared on the planet’s surface. By stating that the formation of these surface waves is quite rare, the researchers said they have gained more insight into the structure of the planet’s crust.
The researchers revealed that the area between the impact area and the emitted fragments has a higher density. Measurements, on the other hand, indicated that the crust beneath the earth had a lower density. It was thought that on this surface, different types of rock or underground rocks could have formed by a different process than in other parts of the planet.
