The mess at Twitter | The standard

Honestly, did anyone ever have the impression, even for a moment, that things would end well between Elon Musk and Twitter? From Musk’s first suggestive tweets in March to the complaint Twitter filed against him to force him to buy the company at the agreed-upon price of $44 billion, it’s been a bad, depressing reality show. Once the lawsuit starts, it won’t improve. Elon Musk first roared that he would take over Twitter to fix the bots problem there. Only to roar a few weeks later that the takeover will not go through, because Twitter has a bot problem. Whimsical and inconsistent? It’s mostly shameless. Everyone knows why he is canceling the deal: the price of technology shares has fallen so hard in the weeks after the sale that the agreed acquisition price now seems too high. His lawyers have advised him that lying about bots is his best chance of escaping the deal, so he lies. Not a word more about the enormous importance of Twitter for democracy, which he supposedly was all about.
